A friend recommended Hecho En Mexico and while I’m not usually in that part of town (William Cannon almost to 71) I found myself there today. MIND BLOWN!

I like mole but it’s hard to find good mole. My favorites up until now in Austin have been at Habanero and Sazon. I still like both of them, but the Mole here blew them out of the water!

I got the mole rosa with pork shank. The came on the bone but was tender enough that the bone pulled right out. The mole was fresh, with a cinnamon hint but complex and interesting and lovely. I ate the whole plate.

My friend got the Mole Poblano with chicken. I think this is the style of mole “with chocolate” most restaurants here serve? It was slightly sweeter I’ve experienced but not in a bad way. More rich than my mole, but also complex. The chicken was juicy and tender although I would have picked a more interesting protein. I would order this mole again for sure.

Can’t wait to go back and try the two others!

We also tried the queso flameado. It was cheesy and salty in the best way. The tortilla chips were thick and flavorful. The salsa was good. Nothing super special but we enjoyed it. I also had a happy hour margarita which wasn’t too sweet and I consider that a plus. I had a Mexican whiskey cocktail that was smoked and slightly sweet and out of this world!!

Can’t wait to go back. Worth the trip.

They should seriously consider offering a mole sample flight/plate. 😲

edit: Immediately after posting this, I saw the enchilada special where you can get up to 3 mole sauces and posted this update but people evidently are not seeing it so updating here.

Sounds like chef Mario is still going strong. They’ve been the real deal as long as I can remember. Big fan of their Tequila Dinner nights, too.

I went thinking Texmex. They served the salsa in a spoon, so I was confused. Looked at the menu and realized I was in the wrong place. People around me seemed to be enjoying it. Yeah, Hencho in Mexico should have 😳

I absolutely love Hecho en Mexico. It’s the best kept secret south of the river. It’s authentic and absolutely delicious. I’ve never had a bad or even mediocre dish there.

Fortunately it’s not too far from me.

Been eating here a long time – it’s delish! If you’ve never really had decent mole, this is a good place to start.

  6. There used to be one out near Steiner Ranch and I got invited to a work lunch there and had the same mind blowing experience. Absolutely some of the best food I’ve had in Austin!

The Mancha Manteles is divine, and the La Pegadora margarita is even better!

Yes, yes they are. Oddly enough, there hardly is anyone at lunch time. It’s a family run business where they cook with love and it shows.

Wait- allergic to shrimp but love mole. Shrimp picture on every one except one which says it’s made with shrimp broth. Are these all made with shrimp?

I was scared they closed since the very hidden Riverside and PV location was closed.

Hidden gem in Southwest Austin. I have never been to their other locations.

Mario and Maria own the place. Really Nice couple. I used to live in oak hill and was a regular. Just moved back down south and have already gone back twice!!

They have Great interior Mexican food And a fantastic variety of tequilas. Their paired tequila dinners are fun.

The chile en nogadas is so good. I dream about it . the Filete de Res en Salsa de Rosas. I’ve never had anything like it. And the blanco mole and chicken enchiladas are my favorite when I just can’t decide. Carne Pibil is good too!!!

My grandma would make mole with peanut butter. It was so damn good. Fuck all this chocolate mole that every restaurant seems to serve

I love their lunch options. Some of the best interior Mexican food in the city. I need to get down there for dinner so I can try the other moles.
